The Tannery Series Teams Up with the Peabody Essex Museum to Explore the World

Grab your gear! It’s time for a road trip, Tannery Series style.

2013 promises to be a year full of new adventures and exciting changes. In addition to our Newburyport programs, we’ll be traveling to Salem to host three fascinating literary events designed to coincide with the Peabody Essex Museum’s major international art exhibits. We’ll add our unique literary spice to the Museum’s ongoing PEM/PM program, a series of wonderfully warm and unconventional evening gatherings. On the third Thursday of February, June, and November, The Tannery Series will bring authors to the Museum’s Atrium to read, talk and celebrate PEM’s special exhibits on India, America and Japan. Come see the art on the wall meet the word on the page. Enjoy food, music, conversation, a world-class art exhibit and the chance to discover the best books you’ll read all year.

First up–Hot Fusion: Explosive, Global India.

February 21st, from 6:30 to 9:30pm @ the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA

We’ll be joining PEM to explore the brilliant, booming Subcontinent.

On the program:

Suketu Mehta (Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found) reading from his stunning, roiling nonfiction account of life in Mumbai. From starry-eyed villagers to crime bosses to Bollywood movers and shakers, Mehta takes it all in, investigating this riotous mega-city with a style that is both hilarious and heartbreaking.

Rajesh Parameswaran (I am an Executioner: Love Stories) reading from his wildly original fiction debut: nine stories about the power of love and the love of power, which feature a newlywed executioner, an ex-CompUSA employee and a lovesick tiger who’s having a very bad day. At once glittering and savage, elegant and funny, these are tales where reality loops and twists and shines and is wholly unforgettable.

Rishi Reddi (Karma and Other Stories) reading from her dazzling, debut short story collection. Stretching both the mind and the heart, these gem-like short stories transport us from America to India and back again, in search of a freedom that transcends both custom and country.

In addition to these three award-winning writers, you’ll see PEM’s Atrium transformed into the Samovar Café, Bombay’s artistic and intellectual hotspot. Taste street food; hear Bhangra and Bollywood beats. Join in as The Tannery Series hosts a conversation about art, books, America and explosive, global India.

Refreshments available for purchase in the Atrium Café. “From Midnight to the Boom” and other exhibitions open throughout the evening.
